An overview of 2 decades of holdin Short Film Festivals

Tehran Short Film Festival has started its 37th season in the shadow of Corona, which has gone through many ups and downs during the first two decades.

 The 37th Tehran Short Film Festival has started in the side section with educational sessions since yesterday.

Contrary to expectations, the outbreak of the coronavirus caused the screening of short film festival films to be postponed until the deadly breath of the virus subsided a bit and conferences were held in a limited way and in accordance with health protocols.

A brief overview of the first decade of the Short Film Festival
Thirty-seven years have passed since the first Tehran Short Film Festival was held; An event that was born from the heart of the Fajr Film Festival and started as a side part of it; The time of its activity was tied to the same date of Fajr Film Festival, that is, February 3 to 3, 1982.

It was one of the first periods that the festival was held in two side and main sections; But this is not the only thing that happened to this festival, in these thirty-seven periods, it has seen many ups and downs, from the migration of the festival in the third period from Tehran to Shiraz to the administration of the festival by the organizing council, which the organizers reached in the fourth period. The fifth period can be considered as the time for the audience to get acquainted with this newborn event.

In the sixth period of the festival, it was held under the supervision of the then deputy director of cinema, and with the increase in the presence of female filmmakers in the seventh period, what finally distinguished the eighth period from other periods was the removal of the photo section from the festival. The major change in the ninth period was the elimination of the side section and the review of a year of young cinema and the addition of the festival sections of festivals and experiences.

Eventually, the ninth season, the audience became one of the dynamic elements of the festival. During this period, polls were conducted every day to select the best film from guests and spectators.

In its second decade, the Tehran International Short Film Festival witnessed the addition of a 100-second film section, the presence of international works, and the comprehensiveness of the festival compared to the previous decade in the country.

In the following and on the eve of the 37th Tehran International Short Film Festival, we will review the developments and achievements of the second decade of the festival, ie the 11th to 20th period, year by year.

Step 11; Festival on the eve of the second decade
The 11th edition of the Young Cinema Festival was held on April 28-12, 1994 at the Bahman Cultural Center.

Vahid Toofani Asl was the original secretary of the course and Alireza Karimi Saremi was the executive director and secretariat, Mojtaba Aghaei Sarbarzeh was the deputy director of the photography department, Mehdi Abdollahi was the deputy director of the film department, Amir Hoshang Daraei was in charge of the image network, Nasser Shameli was in charge of support and Ismail Abbasi was the newspaper editor.

The judges of this period were Ali Shidfar, Hamidreza Ashtianipour, Jahangir Almasi, Mohammad Sharifi and Houshang Moradi Kermani in the film section, and Mohammad Afrideh, Ismail Rahimzadeh and Mohammad Reza Sarhangi were in charge of judging the works in the script section. Narjes Khatoon Oveisi, Jacqueline Mirsadeghi, Mohammad Tehrani, Masoud Zandeh Rouh Kermani, Houshang Salamat, Ali Asghar Davoudabadi Farahani and Mehrdad Najmabadi also judged the works in the photo section.

 The international winners, the photography section, a look at the history of Iranian amateur cinema, the special plays section and the festival on the eve of the second decade were the side sections of this period. Review sessions were held by Khosrow Sinaei during the festival.

Step Twelve; Publication of a book of festival works
The twelfth edition of the Young Cinema Festival was held on April 28-12, 1995.

Vahid Toofani Asl was the original secretary of the course, and Alireza Karimi Saremi, executive director, Hassan Dezvareh of International Affairs, and Mehdi Abdollahi, deputy director of the film, formed the festival’s organizing committee, which was held at the Bahman and Shafaq Cultural Centers.

The members of the jury in the film section were Hamid Reza Ashtianipour, Ali Akbar Ghazi Nezam, Mohammad Jafar Safi, Mahmoud Clari and Nasser Gholamrezaei, and in the script section Ismail Rahimzadeh, Dariush Norouzi and Mohammad Reza Sarhangi were in charge of judging the works.

During this period, selected screenplays were published in a book entitled “A Garden Full of Blossoms”. Also, the daily magazine was published in 6 issues to the editor Saeed Rajabi Forootan.

Step 13: Add 100-second films to the festival
The Young Cinema Festival was held in the thirteenth period from July 19 to August 2, 1996, and Mohammad Hossein Sufi, the then managing director of the Iranian Youth Cinema Association, was the secretary of this period.

The members of the organizing council include Mojtaba Aghaei Sarbarzeh, Deputy Secretary, Alireza Karimi Saremi, Executive Director, Hassan Dezavareh, International Director, Jalil Shabani, Deputy Director of Screenwriting, Masoud Zandeh Rouh Kermani, Deputy Director of Photography, Mohsen Ali Mohammadi, Public Relations and Mohammad Mehdi Asgarpour, Deputy Director of Education and Production It becomes.

The jury in the film section was Mahmoud Clari, Nasser Gholamrezaei, Mohammad Jafar Safi, Ali Akbar Ghazi and Hamidreza Ashtianipour, and Mohammad Sattari, Jahangir Cheraghi, Bahman Jalali, Yahya Dehghanpour and Mitra Mahaseni were the judges in the photography section.

During this period, 100-second films were added to the festival as a side event.

 Step Fourteen; Exhibition of world works in the festival
The fourteenth edition of the Young Cinema Festival was held from April 6 to 7, 1997, with Mohammad Hossein Sufi as its secretary.

The jury of this course was composed of Jahangir Almasi, Javad Shamqadari, Kamal Tabrizi, Mohammad Kasebi and Majid Majidi.

In the fourteenth period of showing international films, it was considered as a side part and this period of the festival was held in three parts: film, photo and screenplay, and Babak Foroutani was the poster designer of this period.

Step Fifteen; Festival maturity
The 15th edition of the Young Cinema Festival was held on April 15-18, 1998, under the direction of Vahid Toofani Asl.

The members of the organizing council are Alireza Karimi Saremi, Executive Director, Hassan Dezvareh, Director of International Affairs, Habib Ilbeigi, Director of Public Relations, Ebrahim Tajaddad Alizadeh, Education, and  Mojtaba Aghaei Sarbarzeh, Secretary of Photography.

lso in the film section, Nasser Taghvaei, Kamal Tabrizi, Ahmad Alsti, Keyvan Jahanshahi, Gholam Heidari, Mohammad Davoodi, Bahram Dehghani, Mojtaba Rai and Ahmad Talebinejad judged the works and Jahangir Cheraghi, Mohammad Ghafouri, Ahmad Nateghi, Masoud Zandeh Rouh Kermani and  Mojtaba Aghaei Sarbarzeh was the judge of the photo section.

Simultaneously with the festival, in addition to a catalog in two languages, three books of short films by independent cinema, Goleston (a collection of screenplays and photographs of the participants) were published. Babak Froutani was the poster designer of this period.

Step 16; Extensive presence of filmmakers from different parts of Iran
The 16th edition of the Young Cinema Festival was held on April 15-18, 1998, with Jafar Sanei Moghaddam as its secretary, with Alireza Karimi Saremi as executive director, Hassan Dezavareh as director of international affairs, and Habib Ilbeigi as director of public relations. The Palestine Cinema and the Museum of Contemporary Art hosted the festival.

 The jury of this period in the competition section of Iran (a) Kiomars Poorahmad, Kamal Tabrizi and Majid Majidi, in the competition section of Iran (b) Mohammad Ali Talebi, Mahvash Sheikhat-ol-Islami and Ali Mohammad Ghasemi and the international competition Manouchehr Asgari Nasab, An Jela Hart, Korsi Kinnon, Amirit Ganjar and Jan Baka.

Children and Adolescents and Short Films, Lasting Moments, Dialogue of Civilizations, A Review of Flanders’ Short Films, Selected by Unique’s 99-98, A Review of the Works of Ali Mohammad Ghasemi was a side section of this period.

During this period, the venue was moved to a cinema after many years. The presence of more than 20 female filmmakers in the international section and showing the works of filmmakers from 15 different cities was one of the highlights of this period.

Step 17; The passionate presence of world cinematographers
The 17th Young Cinema Festival was held from November 26 to 30, 2000, with Jafar Sanei Moghaddam as its secretary.

The members of the organizing council were Alireza Karimi Saremi, Executive Director, Mohammad Afrideh, Production Manager, Hassan Dezavareh, International Director, and Habib Ilbeigi, Public Relations Manager.

The course was hosted by the Center for Cultural and Artistic Creations of the Children and Adolescents Intellectual Center, Palestine Cinema, and the Cinematheque of Museum of Contemporary Art.

The jury of this period in the competition section of Iran (a) Saeed Hajimiri, Ali Mohammad Ghasemi, Zavan Ghokasian, Kianoosh Ayari, Nasser Taghvaei and in the competition section of Iran (b) Ahmad Zabeti Jahromi, Massoud Emami, Mojtaba Rai, Ali Shidfar and Reza Sobhani and In the international competition section, Ahmed Alasti, Roger Gunin, Asako Fujioka, Al-Assad Al-Jamousi and Zitakar Valkhosa.

Children and Adolescents and Short Films, Dialogue of Civilizations, Review of a Number of Martyr Avini’s Works, Special Screenings, Review of Animation Films by the National Film Center of Canada, Review of Dutch Short Films, Review of French Short Films and Review of the Works of Vahid Mosaian It is one of the side parts of this period.

During this period, the daily magazine “Negah” was published under the supervision of Ali Shidfar and Reza Abedini was in charge of designing the poster.

Step 18; Added the Dialogue of Civilizations section
The 18th edition of the Young Cinema Festival was held from 1 to 6 November 2001, and as in the previous edition, Jafar Sanei, the then CEO of the Iranian Young Cinema Association, was its secretary. This course was held in Tehran Cultural and Artistic Complex (Iran Cinema).

The jury of this period in the Iranian competition section consisted of Rakhshān Banietemad, Mohammad Reza Sharifi, Mohammad Reza Aslani, Ali Moallem and Reza Mir Karimi. Also in the special section of short films on the subject of Imam Ali (AS) Seyed Hamid Mir Khandan, Abbas Moallemi, Ahmad Reza Delavari and Alireza Sajjadpour were in charge of judging the works.

Georgy Carpathi, Majid Majidi and Shane Smith were the judges of the International Competition section, and Hassan Dezwareh, Hisham Jamaluddin Mohammad Al-Khatib, Mario Vitalone and Constantine Pasalis were the judges in the Dialogue of Civilizations section.

Step 19; Extensive support for the festival
The 19th edition of the Young Cinema Festival was held from 1 to 6 November 2001, and Mojtaba Eghdami was the then CEO of the Iranian Young Cinema Association.

The judges of this period in the Iranian competition section were Jafar Sanei Moghaddam, Mohammad Reza Jafari Jelveh, Alireza Raisian, Kambozia Partovi and Parviz Samadi Moghaddam and in the international competition Alireza Shoja Nouri, An Dori Badnarak, Yuk Moii Chang, Amir Amari and Stavos Stavros Khasapis.

The National Youth Organization, the First Channel of IRIB, the Shaghayegh Rosta Cultural and Artistic Institute, and Homa Airlines were among the sponsors of the course. Morteza Akuchekian designed the poster of this period.

Step 20; Rename the festival to a short film
The twentieth edition of the Young Cinema Festival was held from October 19 to November 25, 2003, and Mohammad Afrideh, the then CEO of the Iranian Young Cinema Associationwas the secretary of this course.

The members of the organizing council included Mojgan Zargar, Executive Director, Hassan Dezvareh, International Director, Shahnam Safajoo, Public Relations Manager, Alireza Yoshi, Website Designer, Soheil Jahan Bigleri, Farideh Farkhondeh Kish, Massoud Bakhshi and Shirin Naderi.

This course was held in Palestine Cinema, Carpet Museum and three cultural centers and at the same time in Ardabil, Bushehr, Mashhad, Sanandaj and Khorramabad.

Dariush Yari, Mehdi Jafari, Robert Safarian, Ali Akbar Ghazi Nezam, Arash Rasafi, Ebrahim Tajaddad Alizadeh, Kourosh Garmsari, Nasrin Shahmohammadi, Shahram Mokri and Fima Emami were the members of the selection committee.

The jury in the national competition section consisted of Vahid Mosaeian, Reza Maghsoudi, Mohammad Davoodi, Kamal Tabrizi and Ahmad Alasti, and the international competition consisted of Alireza Shoja Nouri, Peter Wayne, Ceylon Marit, Sego Tono and Erich Reese.

A review of the works of Qazvin province, a quarter of a century with the revolution, selected 20 years of short films of the Young Cinema Festival, a review of Bosnian short films, a review of Japanese short films, a review of British and German short films (from yesterday to today), a review of Amir Shahab Razavian and a review of the works of Saed Nikzat were the side sections of this period. From this period onwards, the festival changed its name to a short film.

In evaluating the second decade of Tehran International Short Film Festival, these 10 years can be considered as a path that leads to the evolution and introduction of this cinematic event, because in this decade we see the addition of various sections to the festival, each in the following years. They gain an important place and prestige in the eyes of the audience of this cinematic event.

Also, the International Short Film Festival was able to go beyond the limited circle of audiences, which generally included short film directors and activists in this field, and attract the audience and public interest in this event and, of course, the short film nationally and globally.

The 37th Tehran International Short Film Festival, under the auspices of Seyed Sadegh Mousavi, has started with 20 specialized meetings since yesterday, Wednesday, November 28th.
