Documentary Photography Magazine wants to add a new perspective to the field of photography.

The managing director of Documentary Photography Magazine said that the purpose of publishing the magazine is to add new perspectives to the field of photography and said: “We want to go beyond the limited circle that has been formed and show collections that young novices have recently taken.”

According to Artmag quoted by IRNA, In the last days of the autumn season, the first issue of the specialized documentary photography magazine was made available to the audience.

This publication has been published under the title “Photo and Social Research” by Amir Narimani, Executive Director and Editor-in-Chief, Saharnaz Emami, with an introduction by Nasser Fokouhi, Professor of Anthropology, University of Tehran.

Amir Narimani, in response to the question of how he came up with the idea of publishing a magazine about documentary photography in this situation, said: I have been working in the media for many years, it is my academic field and in fact my field of work as a student is an intern. And he has been a journalist and a photographer in the field of media, and I am no stranger to this atmosphere. This is my second experience as a managing director and media owner, and we already had a magazine in the field of culture and art, and for some reason we decided to do more specialized work.

Referring to the problems of printing, he added: “The situation with printing and paper publications is not good and the print book is very small, but I feel that if we are more specialized and have a plan, we can have fewer numbers than what we consider.” We have to reach our goal of publishing the magazine and strive for it. The more specialized the publications, the more sales and marketing they have, because the target audience is clear, if the magazine is published with a specific target audience, the goal can be achieved with patience.

Narimani in response to the question how long did the process of forming the magazine and introducing it take? He said: I work in the field of photography and photographers know me, the introduction of our work has been more in cyberspace and the great photographers were kind and saw our work for number one and showed good reactions, it is an important issue. It is not possible anymore in this period to want to work. Based on past experience, I decided to manage everything online, and except for the printing conditions, everything was done in cyberspace. The magazine is also published in print and online. The managing director of the documentary photography magazine added: “Our editorial office is online and our colleagues are from all over Iran and even from foreign countries. We have a writer from Spain and I try to increase the access of my colleagues by changing the approaches of the classical editorial office.” Without having to be present in a specific geography. The introduction to the magazine was written by Dr. Fokouhi, who now resides in France.

Regarding the feedback he received from the publication of this magazine, he said: “I was only able to participate by publishing the cover of the magazine. We have also received good reactions from young novices who knew that we do not have a magazine in the field of documentary photography.” One of our plans is to publish collections that young novices have recently acquired. We will go to previous generations, veterans and experienced people to transfer experience, but there are hard-working and talented people who work in Iran or abroad. They have done differently and our target community is the same people.

Narimani, referring to the experience of the secretary of the Iranian Press Photo Festival, said: “In this festival, we received photos that I wondered how a young person can achieve such an understanding and we realized that these young people do not have access to publish their works and only if If it is a festival, they can present their work, if not, they only produce, and because they are not in Tehran and do not have different galleries available to exhibit, their work will not be seen. I am looking to create a space that adds new perspectives to the field of photography, especially documentary photography, and to step out of that limited circle that is formed and limited people are seen and their work is considered, and to the best of our ability and Aware that we need time to be able to show our work, we are looking for a younger generation to give them a newer space, to talk to them to find out what is going on in their minds and what their concerns are. Photographers who have been working for more than 5 years but have not been published anywhere. I saw collections that tell a story with 12 photos that we have never paid attention to.

He said: “We have received good feedback in the same period. In documentary photography, the subject of the photo is not beautiful, it is a matter of concern that the photo conveys and the concepts that are presented.” In my opinion, if a situation like Corona does not arise, we can conclude from the publication of this magazine.

We want the photo to go to people’s houses

Narimani said about the publication of the magazine: the printed version reached the subscribers last week. I did not have a good experience selling the magazine on the stand, when a magazine was supposed to be distributed on the fifth day of each month, but if we went on the twentieth day, we could not find it. This publication is not presented in the kiosk, because it will have a lot of losses and will not be well distributed. We have a joint group and on the other hand we have used magazines and cyberspace to sell magazines on online sales sites. The bookstores and galleries that are related to our work are also one of the places where we will offer the magazine with special packaging in those places.

Our main goal is for the photo to go to people’s homes and be tangible and lasting instead of cyberspace. We may see the photo on the phone once a month, but when it is printed, you sometimes flip through it. The goal of documentary photography is to convey a concept, to create a new belief, or to destroy another belief, one of its tasks that makes it more important to be seen. My group and I prefer our magazine to go home, we do not want to do decorative work, we want to be effective.

The first issue of the specialized documentary photography magazine, with an interview with Kamran Adl, one of the leading documentary photographers and architects of Iran, a collection of photographs on the subject of quarantine entitled “Maryam’s children” by Maryam Rahmanian, “Immigration” by Salman Sam Daliri, quitting Taliban addiction “Flip Dana” and Afghanistan from the perspective of WB Blue and a note entitled “Why Documentary Photography is Important” by Mahgan Farhang, a culture and media expert, have been prepared for those interested in documentary photography.

This issue of the magazine has been prepared and published in “Man” studio with the design of Farnaz Sedighi logo and Ali Shams uniform.
