Biography
He was born in a family in Kermanshah and a musician in Tehran. He started freelance music from the age of five. He started playing music professionally at the age of twelve, and at the age of thirteen he began working with the Kermanshah Radio and Television Orchestra. For a short time, he collaborated with the Shida group at the Chavush Art Center. At the age of seventeen he settled in Italy and then went to Canada with the intention of pursuing a degree in composition from Carleton University in Ottawa. Kalhor first began his serious career with the Dastan Ensemble and with the music of Iraj Bastami, which resulted in a concert in the Vahdat Hall in the early 1970s. The album was later released to the public. But Kalhor, with the album of the night, The Silence, the Desert, gained a special fame with the song of Master Mohammad Reza Shajarian. The proper orchestration and harmonization and the innovations he put in to make it one of the most prominent and best-selling albums of the last two decades. In this work, he used music artists from Iranian regions such as: Late Haj Ghorban Soleimani, Ali Abchouri and Hossein Babi. Kamancheh is a professional instrumentalist of Kayhan Kalhor, who plays alongside Kamancheh, Tanbour, Sitar and Shahman. He has worked extensively to introduce Iranian music to non-Iranians, collaborating with Indian artists such as “Shujaat Husain Khan” in the Kronos Quartet Lyrical 1, 2 and 3 (Silk Road), Yuyu Ma and the New York Philharmonic. He has become a global artist and has many listeners among non-Iranians. He believes that musicians, musicians or musicologists must be familiar with mathematics, history and literature.

Master Kalhor has mentioned Master Ali Asghar Bahari in several lectures and interviews on the Silk Road Complex about his motivation and role in Kamancheh music. Performing independent concerts improvised and accompanied by Mohammad Reza Shajarian, Hossein Alizadeh and Homayoun Shajarian are often the activities of this renowned artist. Five albums: It’s winter, it’s not without you, the scream, the silent instrument and the anthem of Mehr are the result of this collaboration. He has performed concerts in different regions of the world with Turkish bass player Ardalan Arzjan and has also released an album with the Turkish musician The Wind at ECM.

One of his other works is the album of The First Meeting In Morning, that the art of improvisation and Chahargah of Kalhor system was Tombak Pejman Haddadi. Kalhor is also involved in composing for the soundtrack. He has collaborated with various artists from other cultures. Artistic collaboration with Ardal Erzurjan from Turkey, Bravery Hussein Khan from India, Yoyuma from China, Zhao Zhiping, Alim Qasimov from the Republic of Azerbaijan, Brooklyn Ryder from the USA, New York Philharmonic Orchestra, Holland Quartet and the Dutch Wind Ensemble Has become. Kalhor has performed with Iranian artists including Mohammad Reza Shajarian, Ali Akbar Moradi, Shahram Nazeri, Hossein Alizadeh and Dastan Ensemble.

Master Kayhan Kalhor, has been nominated for a Grammy nomination with albums: Without You, Scream, Rain and Beyond Geography, in which he has been a composer and musician. At the 51st Grammy Awards, Kayhan Kalhor, along with the Silk Road band led by Yuyuma, won the Grammy Award for Best World Music with their sing me home album.
