About Mohammad Reza Shajarian and calligraphy of movie titles

Recently, Abbas Baharloo, a film critic and film researcher, mentioned on his personal Instagram page, citing the example that Shajarian was the film’s calligrapher in 1960. Shajarian had achieved an excellent rank in calligraphy a year earlier and was still collaborating with the radio as a singer under the pseudonym of Siavash Bidgani.

“Abjad” is the second film that uses Shajarian’s voice, but none of the compositions and songs of the work are exclusive and his previous readings are used; “The State of Love”, “Iran is a House of Hope”, etc. This film by Abolfazl Jalili is interesting because of the similarities between the main character and the teenager of the film (possibility) and parts of Shajarian’s life, and justifies his voice presence. At one point, Shajarian faced opposition from his family for his work in the arts, and at another, he wrote paintings.

Shajarian had achieved an excellent rank in calligraphy a year earlier and was still collaborating with the radio as a singer under the pseudonym of Siavash Bidgani. Interestingly, the producer and actor of the main role in both films was Reza Beyk Imanvardi.

Mohammad Banki, a 76-year-old producer, director, actor and photographer who photographed both films, told Iran Jomeh about the reason for 31-year-old Shajarian’s involvement in the work: Became RB Studio. He was friends with Mr. Shajarian. “That’s why he introduced him to write the credits.”

When we ask a Banki if Beik Imanverdi and Shajarian had a meeting or is there a joint photo of them? He replies: “Mr. Shajarian was not famous at that time. “It is possible that when he came to the studio to see Mr. Karimi, he also saw Mr. Beik Imanverdi, but I do not think there is a joint photo of them.”

The fact that Shajarian never mentioned his calligraphic presence in these two films later should probably be related to their low quality level and the atmosphere of their Persian films. One of the interesting points of the title of the movie “Hook” is that Shajarian wrote the names of two famous female singers of that time who sing songs in this movie in Nasta’liq calligraphy. At that time, perhaps no one, not even Shajarian himself, knew that the calligrapher of those two films would, in the future, become brilliant singers in music. Years ago, before writing Pouran’s name in the title of a Persian film, he had tried to play the song “O Simin, do not flirt” with Pouran Khanom with a dulcimer overnight.
