Biography
Sasan Moayyedi, a documentary photographer and filmmaker, started his career at age of 17 on the educational television of National Iranian Radio and Television, in Tehran. He is a veteran Iranian photographer in the field of war, social documentary, theater and cinema; He is a member of the Association of Press Photographers and the Association of Photographers of the Revolution and Holy Defense and has won numerous awards, most of which have earned him a reputation for photographing the Iran – Iraq war and later documentary photography of Syria and Kurdistan. From the beginning of 1981, he continued his work in the graphic photography unit of Soroush Publications, under the supervision of Bahman Jalali. He was one of the first journalists to document Saddam Hussein’s 1988 chemical attack on the Kurdish city of Halabja, and in fact, some of the most iconic images of tragedy were captured by his camera. After retiring in 2005, he continues his activities as a freelance photographer. From the beginning until today, Master Moayyedi has not put down his camera and has tried different types of photography, including war and social documentary photography, theater and cinema photography, modeling photography and advertising. Above all, he is known for his valuable photographs of the Iran – Iraq war. Two collections: Halabja and Bombing of Tehran, are among his works during the war years. He is not limited to war photography and to this day, he has photographed many documentary projects in different parts of Iran. Moayyedi has been photographing Kurds in Iran, Iraq, Turkey and Syria for 15 years, capturing impressive images of Kobani as well as ISIL’s war with the Kurds.

His works have been published in the form of 7 photo books (Personal) and have been displayed in 39 solo exhibitions. Published works of photographs from the eight years of the Holy Defense immediately draw the audience’s attention to the collection of the imposed war, which was published between 1982 and 1988. These books were valuable and glorious works that were published in 6 volumes in Germany. Some of his most important photo collections are: Tehran, 50 Days of War, Prisoner Exchange (War Prisoners), War Photographers, Halabja, Masouleh, Bayat Carpet, The Image of the Sun, Kobani, Izadian, A Love Story; And Nazanin(Cute).

Alfred Fried Photography Award
In 2020, Master Moayyedi became the first Iranian to win the main prize at Alfred Farid International Peace Photo Festival in Vienna, Austria. Each year, the top 5 photos of festival are awarded the Alfred Farid Peace Medal, and one of them is selected as the “Peace Image of the Year” and receives a cash prize of 10,000 euros. This photo in the collection: Immortal Art will be kept in the Austrian Parliament. The award, which has been presented since 2013, aims to discover the best picture of the better side of human life and the positive aspects of world change. The festival was inspired by Alfred Hermann Fried, an Austrian peace activist and winner of the 1911 Nobel Peace Prize.

According to the news published on the information channel of the Iranian Embassy in Vienna, ceremony of announcing and awarding the winners of this festival, which was postponed due to Corona, will take place on Monday, July 19, 2021, in Baden, Austria, with the presence of prominent cultural and artistic figures. The event was attended by Speaker of Austrian Parliament and David Beasley, Executive Director of United Nations World Food Program and winner of 2020 Nobel Peace Prize. Photographers from Russia, France, Germany, Austria and Nigeria were the other winners.

The Embassy of the Islamic Republic of Iran in Austria received his award on behalf of Moayyedi. This Iranian photographer participated in this festival with a collection of photos: Love Story, which includes photos from the life of Salah Saeedpour and his wife Sarveh Amini. Salah Saeedpour lost his hands and two eyes in a mine explosion in 2001 at the age of 15; Later, with the help of his wife, he overcame the difficulties of life and won numerous medals and honors at the national and international levels in the field of swimming for the disabled.
