Opening of 3rd Exhibition of Contemporary Graphic History of Iran

The third exhibition of graphic works “History of Contemporary Iranian Graphics”, which includes works from 1965 to 1967, was opened at the Graphic Museum of Iran.

 According to the Artmag, quoting the public relations of Iranian Graphic Designers Society, the third exhibition of graphic works entitled “History of Contemporary Iranian Graphics” by Sima Moshtaghi and with artistic management of Ahmad Karimi by Iranian Graphic Designers Association, opened in Graphic Museum of Iran

 At the opening ceremony of the third exhibition of graphic works entitled “History of Contemporary Graphic Iran”, which includes works from 1965 to 1967, Seyed Ahmad Mohit Tabatabai, Fatemeh Karkehabadi (Chairman of Board of Graphic Designers Association), Mehrdokht Darabi (Secretary of Association), Majid Baluch, Abbas Mashhadizadeh, Mohsen Soleimani, Maryam Ronaghi, Sima Moshtaghi and Davood Shirmohammadi were present.

 Mehrdokht Darabi, secretary of Iranian Graphic Designers Society, said at the beginning of ceremony: “In addition to collecting and archiving graphic works and holding various exhibitions, Graphic Museum of Iran is responsible for holding periodic exhibitions to present the works in museum and
“It also aims to acquaint those interested with history of Iranian graphics, and for this reason it has held several exhibitions in this regard.”

 Majid Baluch, a veteran graphic designer, explained about the exhibition: “A few years ago, the board of directors of Graphic Designers Society decided to hold series of exhibitions to display graphic works created by Iranian artists in different decades, and in a way “The works should be preserved.”

He added: “Due to large number of these works, we divided them and first and second exhibition” History of Contemporary Iranian Graphics “was held a few years ago under editorship of Maryam Ronaghi and Mehdi Savadkoohi, each of whom due to a jump “The quality and quantity of works over the decades have been remarkable.”

At end of his speech, Baluch expressed his hope: “I hope that conditions will be created so that we can hold these exhibitions in different provinces and cities, because we have many requests to hold these exhibitions in different provinces.”

 Fatemeh Karkehabadi, Chairman of Board of Directors of Iranian Graphic Designers Society, also said at the ceremony: “I am glad that today, in continuation of the” Contemporary Graphic History of Iran “exhibitions, we will open Iran 3 exhibition. “The 1960s were an influential decade in field of graphic design in Iran, and many events that took place in our country during that period and before that have made the works of this period brilliant.”

Referring to distinctiveness of graphic works in Iran in 1960s, he said: “Events such as growth of design and advertising activities following industrialization of the country and growth of production, the growth of publishing industry, “The establishment of art conservatories and universities and emergence of leading artists in various fields, which also paved the way for artists to enter the field of graphics, are among factors that made the forties in the art of graphic design brilliant.”

 Karkehabadi noted: “Although the year of manufacture or name of author of many of the works in exhibition may not be clear or accurate because they were not documented in their time and there are no written, reliable and coherent sources for research in this field, I am glad that today we can Let’s see the rich history full of beautiful events in Graphic Museum of Iran. “Unique works that shaped the history of graphic design in Iran and are reminiscent of the visual memories of several generations of us.”

In the end, the chairman of the board of directors of the Iranian Graphic Designers Society stated: “I thank Sima Moshtaghi, the secretary of the exhibition, who, despite many problems due to the severity of the corona epidemic, continued her research work from the beginning of the year and scored this exhibition in the fall of 2021.” “I also thank the Kufa Printing Complex and its continued support, and the members of the Museum Committee of the Graphic Designers Association for their support and cooperation in the growth and development and documentation of the rich archive of Iranian graphic design history in the Graphic Museum.”

 Sima Moshtaghi, the secretary of third graphic works exhibition entitled “History of Contemporary Iranian Graphics”, said about this exhibition and its formation: Divide into three periods: early (1961 to 1964), middle (1965 to 1967) and final (1968 to 1970). “The beginning of collection and completion of the works in Graphic Museum from 1965 to 1967, both originally and digitally, required the group work of members of the Museum Committee, which began in mid-2020.”

She stated: “The triple division of the 1960s was, on one hand, very positive and exciting, and on other hand, in terms of analysis, dating, and writing articles, with historical interference. For example, it is possible that some of the designs were made in the previous year, but that printing and exploitation took place in those years. “In any case, there was no choice but to use the first printed copy as much as possible as basis for the date of the work, and many articles have been written on same basis.”

Moshtaqi stated: “The outbreak of coronary heart disease has prevented collectors from going directly to document centers, and they have provided as much digital work as possible to complement archive, but there is certainly more evidence to be found in the future,” he said. “With the help of researchers, the puzzle of history of contemporary Iranian graphics can be completed.”

In the end, he addressed the field of works and their separation and said: “In this exhibition, works in the fields of sign design (42 works), book cover, poster (44 works), illustration (90 works), environmental graphics (9 works), Stamps (93 originals and 25 digital works), layout (28 works), Artwork (38 works), packaging (22 volumetric and visual works), card and calendar, medals and coins (5 works), animation (6 images), advertising “(77 works) and the press circular (27 works) have been shown.”

In this exhibition, works by Sirus Afhami, Parviz Kalantari, Morteza Momayez, Ardeshir Mohasses, Farshid Mesghali, Bahman Mohasses, Manouchehr Darfsheh, Aydin Aghdashloo, Parviz Shapour, Ali Asghar Masoumi, Houshang Seyhoun, Ghobad Shiva, Parviz Tanavoli, Parviz Kalantari, Nooredin Zarrin Kelk, etc. are displayed on the page layout, book and magazine covers, and book illustrations, which are considered a rich and lasting treasure in the field of graphics.
