Master Masoud Valadbeigi, a make-up artist has died

Master Masoud Valadebeigi (Father of actor Sahar Valadebeigi), born in 1935, passed away on Tuesday, May 11th.

Valadebeigi, who had taken the Crystal Simorgh of the Fajr Festival for his portrayal of the films “From Karkheh to the Rhine”, “The Last Curtain” and “Ugly and Beautiful”, has He has portrayed films such as “Repentance of Nasuh” by Makhmalbaf, “Kamal al-Molk” by Ali Hatami, “Red” by Fereydoun Jirani, “Day of the Devil” by Behrouz Afkhami, “Sultan” and “Banquet” by Masoud Kimiai and “Duel” by Ahmad Reza Darvish.

One of the works that will immortalize his name in the memory of Iranian visual arts and performances is make-up deign in the series “Mokhtarnameh”. At that time, he, along with eleven other people, undertook the make-up of the characters of the series Davood Mirbagheri and collaborated with Abdollah Eskandari as a special effects designer.

Masoud Valadebeigi had told ISNA that each of the characters in the “Mokhtarnameh” series will reach the final make-up after performing a few times, and while three years had passed since the project was made, he had given the example that the actor playing the role of Mokhtar (Fariborz Arabnia) was made up of almost 200 times!

The way they worked was that they studied the script, attended a meeting with the director (Mirbagheri) and listened to his point of view. After that, they made a make-up design and implemented the designs as a test. In this way, it sometimes happened that they had tested the actor more than 10 times but still did not get what they wanted.

The late Massoud Valadebeigi did not have a model or a photo to design the make-up of the “Mokhtarnameh” series Therefore, he used the narrations of this period, which were passed down from generation to generation and as a criterion.

In Mokhtarnameh series, which was narrated for 16 years from history, the passage of time affected the face of a character like Mokhtar the most, and this trend was not seen much in other characters. Massoud Valadebeigi had explained in this regard: “Mokhtar’s character suddenly grows old and broken due to the conflicts he had. “But the faces of those around him have not changed much during these 16 years.”

“It depends professionally on the story and the script itself, and if that happens without any support, it’s the weakness of the performer,” he said of the sudden change in character make-up that occurs in some series.

Like many artists in the field, Valdebeigi complained about the budget allocated, and attributed the main weaknesses in the field of make-up to the lack of funding. And of course there was an example, “We were faced with a story in which a 20-year-old actor had to be 30 years older. Such an event in makeup requires a special material that is expensive. In such a situation, we have no other choice but to provide the producer of this material or to pay for it from our own pocket, and since the price is high, the producer does not go under and asks the artist to do something. “It is in such a situation that the result of the work is not as it should be and maybe it is, and others judge that the work did not benefit from a good make-up designer.”

Massoud Valdebeigi calmed down next to Maziar Partovi
The body of an old figure of Iranian cinema make-up artist, was buried next to the tomb of the late Maziar Partovi.

According to ISNA, the funeral of Massoud Valadebeigi, who passed away yesterday, was held before noon on Wednesday, May 12, at the Behesht Zahra Artists’ Complex.

His burial ceremony was held in the presence of a number of family members and colleagues of the artist, including Abdullah Eskandari, Manouchehr Shahsavari, Bahar Arjomand, Dariush Salehian, Mitra Aghamiri, Farhad Najafi, Anoushirvan Torbati, etc., due to the Corona restrictions.

Iranian Make-up owes its debt to Massoud Valdebeigi
Abdollah Eskandari expressed his regret over the death of Massoud Valadebeigi, calling him an artist to whom Iranian makeup owes.

In an interview with ISNA, following the death of Massoud Valadebeigi, the old make-up of Iranian cinema, Master Abdollah Eskandari said: “I was informed early in the morning that Mr. Valdebeigi went to the mercy of God and I was very sorry.” He was a veteran in the field of make-up and Iranian make-up owes it to him.

He added: “I really accepted Mr. Valadebeigi as a veteran because apart from his professional work, he was a real, kind and spirited man.” I had the good fortune to be with him in the Mokhtarnameh series, and there I saw his behavior and movements up close, which he did very respectfully and lovingly. Of course, he had been working on the “Mokhtarnameh” series for many years, and after that he became ill and was no longer able to work.
