Esteemed Iranian Photographer Yahya Dehghanpour Passes Away at 86

Tehran – May 15, 2026 – Yahya Dehghanpour, a veteran master photographer and influential educator in Iran, has died at the age of 86. His passing was confirmed on Friday, May 15, marking a significant loss for the nation’s photographic community.

The Iranian Association of Press Photographers issued a statement mourning the veteran artist, saying, “The Iranian Association of Press Photographers extends its heartfelt condolences to the colleagues and family of Yahya Dehghanpour and prays for divine mercy upon his soul.”

Born in Tehran on January 1, 1941, Dehghanpour dedicated much of his life to advancing photography education in Iran. He is widely credited with introducing contemporary Western photographic techniques and theories into the Iranian academic sphere, earning him the moniker “spiritual father of modern photography education.”

His approach successfully bridged the gap between technical skill and intellectual discourse, shaping generations of artists.

Among his most notable contributions was his powerful photographic series documenting the funeral of the iconic poet Forough Farrokhzad in 1967. At just 26 years old, Dehghānpour captured the solemn occasion with a unique blend of poetic sensitivity and documentary rigor. These haunting images were later compiled and published in the book “That Day They Planted Her in the Garden,” which has since become a crucial visual historical document of contemporary Iran.

Dehghanpour was instrumental in elevating photography beyond mere technical execution, emphasizing its role as a medium for critical thought and interpretation. His teachings encouraged photographers to engage with their subjects as deeply as social researchers, discerning and articulating the “core essence of realities through light.” This profound philosophical underpinning distinguished his work and that of his many students, who now represent prominent figures in Iran’s contemporary art scene.

His theoretical contributions, particularly evident in his writings and prefaces for photography books such as “Five Views of Earth,” remain seminal texts for students and scholars of photography in Iran. Dehghānpour consistently argued that the camera is not a passive tool but an active instrument of choice, interpretation, and perspective.

The editorial board of Artmag.ir, a platform for professional Iranian artists, joins the wider community in mourning the loss of this influential artist and educator.
