The passing of Master Mahmoud Farshchian

Master Mahmoud Farshchian, an Isfahan artist, was born on January 24, 1930. He is known as one of the most influential and innovative Iranian painters of the last century. He began his studies at the Isfahan School of Fine Arts and then completed his artistic knowledge in Europe.

According to Artmag.ir, Master Farshchian, by combining the traditional Iranian school of painting with modern styles, has created works that have been exhibited in prestigious museums around the world and in the country, such as the shrine of Imam Ali ibn Musa al-Reza (AS).

His magnificent works, including magnificent religious paintings such as “The Asre Ashura” and “The Guarantee of the Deer”, have gained a distinguished place in the history of contemporary art in Iran and the world, with their unparalleled combination of artistic taste, spiritual commitment, and innovation in technique.

President Masoud Pezeshkian said following the passing of Master Mahmoud Farshchian: “Undoubtedly, the memory and name of Master Farshchian and his brilliant works such as “The Age of Ashura”, “Kowsar”, and “The Guarantee of the Deer” will remain as a shining jewel in the history of culture and art of this land. Works that were a complete mirror of the love, faith, and glory of the culture of Islamic Iran and the history of Shiism.”

He added: “This enduring figure of Iranian art, by creating noble and eternal works, was not only the heir to the originality and splendor of Iranian painting, but also, with his innovation and unparalleled taste, breathed new life into this ancient art and made Iran famous in the global arena.”

Seyyed Abbas Salehi, Minister of Culture and Islamic Guidance, in his message of condolences following the passing of Master Mahmoud Farshchian, said: “He was not only a master painter, but also the architect of the connection between history and spirituality; an artist whose every work was a combination of Eastern wisdom, Iranian aesthetics, and the depth of religious beliefs. His works were not just paintings, but were an illustrated narrative of the faith, love, and identity of a nation that, through the language of color and calligraphy, remained in history forever.”

Following the passing of Master Farshchian, Foreign Minister Seyyed Abbas Araghchi said: “Zamen Ahu”, “Asr Ashura”, “Panah” and “Shams and Rumi”, along with the design of the holy shrines of Imam Reza (AS) and Imam Hussein (AS), are just examples of Master Farshchian’s brilliant sea of creativity and depth of spiritual vision.

He added: Master Farshchian was a “Hafiz” of paintings who, with the elegance of the pen and the magic of color, brought Iranian art to the peak of perfection and left an unparalleled legacy for the culture and art of this land.

Farshchian was not only a master of one of our most delicate traditional arts, but also a bridge between the past and the present, portraying the spiritual heritage and aesthetics of Iranian culture before the eyes of the world. His immortal works, which constitute a large part of the identity and mentality of Iranian culture and art, were a window into the depth of creation, history, and literature, through which the spirit of authentic Iranian art will always live on.

This great loss is a great loss for the world of Iranian art and culture. The name and memory of Master Farshchian will always live on for Iranians. May his pure soul rest in peace and be blessed with divine mercy.
