The Stone Lion, produced in 1365, is an ambitious project with a strong script, which is a symbol of the contrast between tradition and modernity. The presence of the British due to the exploitation of oil, the murder of one of them creates a confrontation to the death between two elders of the Bakhtiari clan; With the roles of “Ezzatolah Entezami” and “Ali Nasirian” in the end, it becomes the most important and lasting film of Jozani’s career and in the fifth edition of Fajr Film Festival, it was also among the prominent films of Iranian cinema and received the Crystal Simorgh Award for the best screenplay. Also in prestigious foreign festivals including; In the 11th Montreal International Film Festival, it was screened in the “Cinema of Today and Tomorrow” section in Montreal, Canada, and was also honored.
Jay Scott, a well-known film critic, wrote in a review about the movie “The Stone Lion” in the famous Canadian newspaper “Globe and Mail”: “The Stone Lion” is a completely different work; This film is closer to “John Ford”, “Akira Kurosawa” and the late Turkish director “Yilmaz Goni” than to “Sergei Parajanov”. Set in the 1930s, it tells the violent story of a Bakhtiari shepherd who protects oil pipelines for foreigners. During this process, Ilati culture is being destroyed.
The role of the shepherd played by “Alireza Shoja Nouri”; By mistake, he is accused of murdering an Englishman whose body he found and skillfully buried. This false accusation causes a clan war, which is an obvious metaphor for contemporary Iranian political struggles. On the one hand, progressive technocrats who are in favor of abandoning tradition; and on the other hand, traditionalists who consider change as a bad thing.
This famous film critic wrote in his article about “The Stone Lion” by Masoud Jafari Jozani: Jozani’s political and cultural relativism was formed by years of living in America. In 1972, when a play he had written was not approved by the Shah’s regime due to its political nature, he went to California, lived in Modesto for three years, and then moved to San Francisco. where he received his BA and MA in Communication Arts in Cinema and Graphics (with lifetime teaching license) from San Francisco State University.
