Variety ranked “The Sun” directed by “Majid Majidi” in the list of the first winners of the Best International Film Award at the 93rd Academy Awards.
According to the IRNA news agency, the 90th Academy Awards, organized by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, will honor the best films screened from January 1, 2020 to February 28, 2021. The 2021 Academy Awards will be held April 25 at the Dolby Theater in Hollywood.
As the time for the 2021 Oscars approaches, the Variety predicts the winners of this award in different categories every year and puts Majid Majidi’s film: “The Sun” on the list of the first places to receive the Oscar for Best International Film on behalf of Iranian cinema.
The Sun, Majidi’s latest film, which deals with the global problem of working children, has been critically acclaimed at film festivals so far, and its young actor Rohollah Zamani won the Marcello Mastrioni Award for Best Young Actor at the 77th Venice Film Festival. Khorshid, produced by Majid Majidi and Amir Banan, continued its success and won the Best Feature Film Award at the Qatar Ajal Film Festival.
This social film tells the story of a 12-year-old boy named Ali and his three friends who are the breadwinners of the family and work hard for a living and sometimes even steal to earn money. During a series of events, Ali is asked to track down a treasure, but he and his friends must register at the Sun School, a charity for educating working children, to access the tunnel where the treasure is hidden. The originality of this film goes back to the play of children, all of whom are working children and none of them are professional actors.
